About Moncayo Natural Park

Moncayo Natural Park

Moncayo Natural Park, located in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain, is centered around the Moncayo massif, with its highest summit, San Miguel Peak, reaching 2,314 meters (7,592 feet). It is the tallest peak of the Sistema Ibérico mountain range, making it a significant landmark in the Iberian Peninsula. The park covers an area characterized by steep slopes, rocky outcrops, dense forests, and alpine meadows. The varied altitude creates distinct ecological zones with mixed oak and beech forests at lower elevations, transitioning to fir groves, junipers, and alpine scrub upward. The park supports an abundance of wildlife including deer, wild boar, foxes, and many bird species such as vultures and the rare bearded vulture. Historically, the mountain has cultural significance, with traces of past rural communities and pilgrimage routes visible. Popular recreational offerings include well-maintained hiking trails, mountain biking routes, rock climbing opportunities, and nature observation. Key landmarks include the peak of San Miguel, the Santuario de la Virgen del Moncayo, and the scenic natural springs around. Visitors are drawn by the dramatic natural landscapes, the chance to reach one of the most prominent peaks in Spain, and the park's peaceful environment. The park is accessible from nearby towns and provides a range of outdoor adventures suitable for casual walkers and experienced mountaineers alike.
